Integration Fellowships are short-term educational fellowships that enable young oncologists practicing in certain countries to spend time at a leading European cancer institute.



Integration Fellowship

Application closed will open in early-2022 and will be announced on ESMO's official channels

This six-week fellowship is offered to young oncologists - in training or qualified - practising in a country that joined the European Union after 2004 or in certain countries classified by the World Bank as low, lower-middle or upper-middle income* to gain first-hand experience and training on a tumour specific area or special skill at a European centre recognised by ESMO. ESMO will match the wishes of the awardees with a suitable host institute, thus the applicant does not need to make contact with possible host institutes beforehand. A tailored six-week programme will then be agreed upon in collaboration with the selected institute.

Aims of the Integration Fellowship:

  • Gain insight in to oncology care at a top cancer centre
  • Opportunity to expand ones professional network
  • Transport knowledge of host institute’s high quality procedures and techniques to the home institute

Amount and duration

The fellow receives 5,000€ for the six-week visit.

The host institution will receive 1,000€ to cover administration costs.

Number of fellowships

Eight fellowships each year.

Application requirements

Please read the full Guidelines and Application Instructions for Integration Fellowship before starting your application.

Candidates must satisfy all of the below criteria:

  • Currently be practicing in one of the countries eligible for this fellowship – full list of countries below*
  • Be an ESMO member age 40 or under at the time of application
  • Be an oncologist or oncologist in training with at least two years of clinical experience in internal medicine or medical, radiation or surgical oncology
  • Be proficient in English 

Application must include:

  • Completed application form
  • Digital portrait photograph
  • Motivation letter, including details of how the techniques acquired during the fellowship will be used in the home institute/country
  • Recommendation letter from the applicant’s department head at home institute
  • Details of the tumour-specific area or special skill that the candidate would like to study during the fellowship
  • Indicate up to three centres they would most like to visit, in order of preference – see list of proposed home institutes (subject to availability of chosen subject and agreement by host institute)

Application review process:

Applications are reviewed by the ESMO Fellowship and Award Committee which comprises leaders in the oncology field. The committee will evaluate and score all aspects of the application, and in particular focus on:

  • The overall quality of the application
  • The motivation letter
  • The extent and level of previous education
  • Other professional training

Applicants with the highest score will be awarded the fellowship.

The candidate’s supervisors in both the host and home institute should preferably be an ESMO member.

Important: All applications must be submitted in English; incomplete applications will not be accepted; applicants will be notified about the result approximately one month after the application deadline.
