How to develop a translational research project with clinical applicability

The aim of the visit:

Precision medicine is an approach to therapeutic strategies precisely tailored to each patient's disease and considered as a method for future medicine. The purpose of this course is to provide an extensive explanation of how translational research should be developed focusing on targeted agents. Starting from the in vitro and in vitro animal models, as a comprehensive and comparative approach to preclinical drug development, describing all new tools we can adopted to better define tumour biologic characteristics of each patients and finally focusing on clinical trials methodology.

Organisation of a research plan:

Day 1 - Role of in vitro models
Day 2 - Role of animal models
Day 3 - Molecular characterisation of tumours in the era of translational medicine
Day 4 - Design of a clinical trials

This workshop is aimed at medical oncologists, clinical oncologists and those with an interest in imaging biomarkers and clinical trial design.

Amount and duration

Each awardee will receive 1,000€ to cover travel, local transport and accommodation. The host institute will receive 2,000€ for administration costs.

Application Requirements

Applicants must:
  • Be an ESMO member of 40 years or under at the time of the application
  • Be proficient in English
  • Be an oncologist or in training to become an oncologist, currently working in internal medicine or medical, radiation or surgical oncology

NB: Candidates who have previously participated in an ESMO TRU Visit cannot apply to take part in a second visit and are therefore not eligible.

Application must include:
  • Completed online application form
  • Motivation letter
  • Recommendation letter from home institute

Application review process

Applications are reviewed by the ESMO Fellowship Committee which comprises leaders in the oncology field. The committee will evaluate and score all aspects of the application, and in particular focus on:

  • The extent and level of previous education (CV)
  • Motivation letter
  • Other professional training
  • Quality of the application
  • How the acquired information and knowledge will be used in the home institute

Priority will be given to applicants who are not currently working at an institute of excellence as well as to applicants who have no laboratory experience, as the TRU Visit is an introduction to translational research.

Applicants with the highest score will be awarded the fellowship.

Important: All applications must be submitted in English; incomplete applications will not be accepted; applicants will be notified about the result approximately one month after the application deadline.
