In 2004 the Palliative Care Unit was created in this public hospital with a long tradition in Medical Oncology and from that time both groups started to work together. Oncology and palliative care merged into one Service: Oncología y Cuidados Paliativos.
- 200 inpatient beds
- 170 full time doctors
- 270 full time staff of nurses, paramedics, technicians, administrative workers
- All services
- Teaching of graduate and post-graduate courses
The hospital offers all the specialities. They are organized under different departments (Surgery, Internal Medicine, Research, Emergency and Central department). The Oncology and Palliative Care Service, is part of the Department of Internal Medicine. Radiotherapy is located outside, in a different centre near the hospital.
Palliative and supportive care
The Oncology and Palliative Care service is composed of 17 members (5 medical oncologists, three nurses, three psycho-oncologists, four palliative care physicians and two secretaries). It assists cancer patients mainly from the problematic area of Vicente Lopez city, Buenos Aires and its outskirts due to the lack of service the surrounding cities have. A big part of the assisted population usually has no health care insurance and belongs to low social class. The department is located inside the “Vicente Lopez County Hospital” and has 6 consulting rooms and a “hospital de día” , the place where treatments are provided. A new bigger area is planned to be ready for 2010 inside the Hospital. It is functioning during the day, from 7am to 6pm.
Young medical oncologists and Palliative Care doctors in training, come every year to improve their knowledge and skills. The centre is linked to the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).
