History
The centre "Abteilung Palliativmedizin der Helios Dr. Horst SchmidtKliniken" (the department of Palliative Medicine of the Helios Dr. HorstSchmidt Kliniken) was founded in 2005 as specialist palliative care service within the setting of the Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken, the major acute care hospital in Wiesbaden.
Profile
The Department of Palliative Medicine is part of the Centre for Haematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care. The 10 bed inpatient unit opened in January 2006 and ambulant support service started in July 2006.
Specialities
The multiprofessional team of the department consists of palliative care physicians and nurses, a physiotherapist, a psychologist, a case manager, a chaplain and administrative support. All members participate in continuous education in palliative care and many of them are members of the German Society of Palliative Medicine (DGP). Members of the department are actively involved in palliative care training of professionals.
Palliative and Supportive Care
The palliative care ward offers specialised, inpatient palliative care for 10 patients. The centre offers consultancy service to all patients within the hospital including a 24 hours on-call availability of palliative care specialists. An outpatient service offers 24/7 care in the outpatient setting in close cooperation with general practitioners, community nursing services and hospice services. Ongoing follow up of bereaved relatives and friends is provided.
