History

The Hospital of Piacenza was founded in 1471 and includes around 30 hospitals. Over the centuries it has undergone a lot of changes, and now resembles a medical fortress in the historical centre of Piacenza.

Profile

The oncology unit comprises:

  • 20 inpatients beds (2-3 for symptom control and cancer complication)
  • 10 outpatient beds
  • A point for information and support (ISP)
  • A consultation office
  • The Oncology-Haematology department comprises also:
  • Haematology and bone marrow-stem-cell transplantation unit
  • Radiotherapy unit
  • Palliative unit with two Hospices

The Department comprises:

  • 1 chief of Department and 3 directors of medical units
  • 12 medical oncologists, 7 haematologists, 4 radiotherapists, 3 psychologists, 2 data-managers, 61 nurses, 8 radiotherapy-technicians.

Specialities

The Oncology-Haematology department has performed a global care programme based on a global approach to neoplastic patients as indicated by AIOM, ESMO, and ASCO guidelines.
Symptoms control, palliative and supportive care are a part of cancer care management.
The hospital of Piacenza has an ongoing project: “Pain free hospital”.

Palliative and supportive care

The Medical Oncology Unit has performed a global care programme based on a global approach to neoplastic patients as indicated by ESMO and ASCO guidelines.
Symptom control, palliative and supportive care are a part of cancer care management.
The Centre provides:

  • 9 Medical Oncologists trained in palliative care
  • 2 psychologists with experience in psycho-oncology and quality of life assessment
  • 24 nurses expert in the management of cancer from support to end of life
  • Volunteers

The Hospital has an ongoing project:  “Pain-free hospital”.
