- ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Refractory Symptoms at the End of Life and the Use of Palliative Sedation.
- 67th World Health Assembly adopts the "Strengthening of palliative care as a component of integrated treatment throughout the life course" resolution. ESMO, UICC, NCD Alliance and other endorsing partners issue palliative care statement at WHA.
2013
- First international data on opioid availability published in Annals of Oncology. ESMO reports: Untreated cancer pain a ‘scandal of global proportions'. Find out more about this important initiative and all the advocacy tools available.
- Publication of the User's Manual for Oncology Clinicians. The guide presents 'clinician's notes' for each of the 16 chapters in the patients' guide – A Guide for Patients with Advanced Cancer: Getting the most out of your oncologist.
- 10th Anniversary of the ESMO Designated Centres Programme with 160 centres worldwide currently accredited.

- Published A Guide for Patients with Advanced Cancer: Getting the most out of your oncologist
- The World Health Organization (WHO) revised edition of the Guidance for Availability and Accessibility of Controlled Medicines supports the work of the ESMO international collaborative project on the availability and barriers to access of opioids. Nathan Cherny, Chair of the ESMO Palliative Care Working Group, comments on the importance of the WHO Guide and its relevance for medical oncologists.
- International collaborative project on the availability and barriers to access of opioids to cancer patients in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Project expands on original ESMO/EAPC European survey published in Annals of Oncology in March 2010.
- Published in Psycho-Oncology "Factors influencing the attitudes and behaviors of oncologists regarding the truthful disclosure of information to patients with advanced and incurable cancer".
- Joint Survey with MASCC/ESMO/EAPC to understand the benefits of the integration of palliative care into oncology and how well palliative care is integrated into cancer care.

2007
- Survey on opioid drugs
- Oncologist/Patient communication survey. The survey was designed to evaluate the important issue of communication between oncologists and patients with advanced cancer. It evaluated the communication practices between physicians and patient and the attitudes impacting communication dynamics and the decision-making process within the setting of life-threatening illness. Factors that impact communication styles and attitudes towards communication were also identified, taking into account the variables of geography, age, sexual experience and education.
