History
The Cancer Centre at St George Hospital has provided a comprehensive cancer service since opening in 1994. The centre provides a complete range of Cancer services to a population of over 450,000 residents. It offer an integrated service for surgical, medical and radiation oncology and palliative care. Care is coordinated through multidsicplinary teams in each tumour stream.
Profile
The Centre has a medical staff of 10 medical oncologists, 6 radiation oncologists and 6 haematologists. There are specialised psychosocial oncology, genetics, nutrition , pharmacy and apheresis services.
Specialities
Peritoneal surface malignancy and prostate cancer brachytherapy. The Centre has a major interest in clincial trials and education.
Palliative and Supportive Care
St George is a major tertiary hospital with a busy consultative and outpatient palliative care service covering patients with both malignant and non malignant disease. The Palliative Care Team is involved in provision of management advice for acute and complex palliative care issues, both physical and psychosocial.
The Palliative Care Service consists of Medical Specialists (Medical Director Dr Jan Maree Davis), Advanced Trainee Registrar, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Clinical Nurse Educator. The service has close links with the In-Patient Palliative Care Unit (Hospice) at Calvary Hospital, located close to St George Hospital.
