History

Created in 1923 by a French authorities' ordinance, the ICM is one of the 18 French Comprehensive Cancer Centres, all non-for-profit private establishments entirely committed to fighting cancer. Directed by Prof.Marc Ychou, the ICM is a member of the UNICANCER group gathering all Cancer Centres in France. The ICM missions focus on a personalized and innovative global patient management (medical, psychological and social) from cancer detection to post-treatment follow-up. Over the years, the ICM rose at the forefront of the top-performing Comprehensive Cancer Centres for clinical, fundamental and translational research in France.

Profile

Montpellier Cancer Institute's activity is organized in 4 departments: Surgery, Radiotherapy, Medical oncology, Supportive care. Our organization allows to provide comprehensive care to patients with cancer and to streamline the provision of care in the institution. With more than 8 000 new cancer patients acknowledged each year, we provide closely integrated oncology and palliative care clinical services as a regional center of excellence.

Specialities

We treat patients with solid tumors at all stages. In 2020, 32 834 patients were treated and followed-up, distributed as follows.

  • 27,5 % Breast cancers (2 474 cases discussed in multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT)/year)
  • 24% Digestive cancers (1 800 cases discussed in MDT/year)
  • 11% Thoracic cancers (826 cases discussed in MDT/year)
  • 9,4% Gynecological cancers (826 cases discussed in MDT/year)
  • 9,3% Genitourinary cancers (257 cases discussed in MDT/year)
  • 6,7% Head and neck cancers (302 cases discussed in MDT/year)
  • 3,5% Sarcoma (1 136 cases discussed in MDT/year)

Palliative and Supportive Care

The Palliative and Supportive Care unit is a multidisciplinary team. The palliative care team is composed of 4 medical physicians, 4 nurses, 1 social worker and 1 psychologist. Our palliative care team is a cross-functional team with transversal activities.

In May 2021, the center opened a supportive care platform (consultation rooms, ambulatory beds, exercise hall, educational and therapeutic space). This new unit hosts our multidisciplinary supportive department staff:

  • dieticians (7), medical nutritionist (3), nutrition specialized nurses (2)
  • psycho-oncology unit (4 psychology practitioners, 1 psychiatrist, 1 doctor in psychology)
  • physiotherapists (3), sports instructor (1),
  • pain specialized physician (5) and nurses (2),
  • social workers (5),
  • palliative team,
  • oncogeriatry physicians (2)
