History
The Department of Internal Medicine, Haematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Palliative Care is integrated well in the "Protetant Hospital of the Bethel Foundation (EvKB)" - University Hospital OWL, Campus Bielefeld Bethel, University of Bielefeld (UK OWL), a maximum care hospital and one of the most important healthcare facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The department has been certified as a study centre by the German Society for Haematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO).

The department offers access to clinical trials, providing patients with specific conditions the opportunity to receive treatment with the latest medications that are not yet commercially available.

Palliative and Supportive Care
The palliative care unit provides 10 beds in total, with two single rooms and four double rooms. The unit is staffed with 10 specialised nurses, 0.8 FTE residents in training, and 0.3 FTE senior physicians. The head of department, Prof. Weißinger, is listed on the Focus list of distinguished physicians for palliative care.
The hospital has established a Multi-professional Palliative Care Service with two part-time physician positions (0.5 FTE each) and two full-time nursing positions. The unit offers comprehensive palliative care through an interdisciplinary team approach, combining medical expertise with psycho-oncological support and complementary therapies such as music and art therapy.
