General description of the institute

The Center for dermato-oncology (ZDO) was founded in 2002 under the umbrella of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre – CCC Tübingen-Stuttgart.

The ZDO is certified according to the guidelines of the German Cancer Society, meeting strict quality requirements, which are annually checked. We are committed to providing personalized  and multidisciplinary cancer care, along with excellence in clinical and translational research. We welcome patients from all countries who want to be treated in our clinic and/or study center.

Expertise

The ZDO coordinates the clinical studies – interventional, observational, investigator-initiated trials (IIT) and translational studies – which involve investigation in patients with skin cancer.

More than 2100 patients with skin cancers are treated annually at the ZDO. We provide individual therapeutic recommendations, after a multidisciplinary discussion, which takes place during the weekly tumor board and molecular tumor board. After registration, patients from other centers can also be presented and discussed. In these cases, the CCC Tuebingen-Stuttgart has in place patient info on the processing of patient data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation. We are focused on recommendations that involve inclusion in ongoing clinical trials, new immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and their combinations, as well as the combination of local and systemic therapies.

The ZDO is also responsible for maintaining the German Central Malignant Melanoma Registry (CMMR). The German CMMR is a prospective database, active since April 1963, including 60  German centers. Currently, some of these centers report data only for defined variables. All melanoma patients treated in Tuebingen are included and continue to be included in the German CMMR.

Finally, we have a strong and long-lasting tradition of welcoming medical and Ph.D. students, MDs, and professionals from other areas, who want to pursue a career in clinical and translational research with a strong focus on skin cancers, particularly melanoma. This tradition has given us internationally recognized expertise in teaching and training in these areas.
