General Description

The Cancer Centre provides a high degree of specialisation for all the major cancers. The Cancer Centre comprises in-patient facilities for Oncology and Malignant Haematology at Singleton Hospital, together with a chemotherapy and haematology day unit, with an aseptic unit on site. The chemotherapy day unit (CDU) provides accommodation and provides a comprehensive service for patients with solid tumours. Chemotherapy for haematological patients is provided in the Haematology day unit.

Chemotherapy is prescribed using an electronic prescribing system (ChemoCare) which is networked to all chemotherapy units in South West Wales.

The radiotherapy department has 4 linacs. 2 have VMAT and CBCT capability and a 3rd linac with VMAT, CBCT and surface topography is currently undergoing commissioning.

The Cancer Centre has one dedicated ward with 30 beds (with scope to increase to 36 beds at periods of high demand) for both oncology and haematology patients. There are two laminar flow rooms for patients requiring bone marrow/stem cell transplantation and one dedicated room for radioactive isotope therapy.

There is a state of the art telemedicine facility allowing regular multi-professional meetings between oncologists, physicians, surgeons and AHPs in Swansea, the South West Region, and Wales as a whole. The system has the facility to transmit and view both high quality radiological images and histopathological slides.

The Cancer Centre is involved in training, through links with Swansea University, The Deanery, South Wales Cancer Network, and Velindre Cancer Centre. Training takes place at all levels from undergraduate lectures and clinical teaching, through to Foundation and Core Medical trainee clinical and educational supervision, and higher specialist training. Singleton Hospital has modern diagnostic radiology and pathology departments with all the sub-specialties required for cancer services. The sub-regional Medical Physics department is also located at Singleton Hospital and has very strong links with the Cancer Centre and with Swansea University. The Department of Nuclear Medicine accommodates an isotope unit that provides most of the necessary isotopes for diagnosis and therapy. There is a mobile PET scanner at the hospital site twice a week.

The cancer centre works closely with the South West Wales Cancer Institute which is part of the Wales Cancer Research Network. The institute runs a large portfolio of clinical trials across the whole of South west Wales. The institute employs a team of research nurses and trial managers who support clinicians in entering patients into clinical trials. The successful candidate would be encouraged to develop the portfolio of trials for their respective tumour sites both in Swansea and West Wales.

The Cancer Centre works closely with the third sector to provide a support service for patients. There is a Macmillan Information Centre within the Radiotherapy Department. The Maggie's Centre, Swansea is sited on the Singleton Hospital site. Maggie's offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. Help is offered freely to anyone with any type of cancer and a comprehensive programme of events is provided. In a collaboration between the University and ABMU there is a new clinical research facility in the Institute of Life Sciences building two together with research dedicated CT and MRI scanners. 

We have 20 consultants, 9 registrars, 3 speciality doctors, and 2 radiotherapy research fellows.
