Training Experience Required

The Medical Oncology department at Hospital del Mar, has training experience first for Oncology training as part of the National Program of Specialties, with 2 residents per year with a structured official program for 5 years. It also hosts international oncology trainees particularly from South America but also from other institutions in Spain for shorter periods of time with particular interests. We also have medical students for 6 weeks rotations. Finally we have a mentorship program for our residents that allows them to be involved in a research project of their interest that could lead to a PhD program after the residency.

General Description

The Hospital del Mar is a modern general and university hospital, active and with research activity, which treats pathologies of medium and high complexity.The Hospital del Mar has 400 conventional hospital beds (41 beds for critical care), 33 Day Hospital places, 31 emergency boxes, 69 consulting rooms, 21 diagnostic rooms, 10 operating theatres and 2 delivery rooms for childbirth. It is currently in the process of expansion, which will double its size, and which will allow it to continue to offer satisfactory cover for the needs of the districts it serves. It has a permanent link with research via the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute)with one of the most outstanding scientific outputs in the country, carrying out projects that bring science closer to the daily application of healthcare to the people it treats.

Expertise

The Medical Oncology department takes care of patients with all solid tumors. We have specialists for all areas integrated in multidisciplinary units for each neoplasm. The focus of our department comprises patient care with a interest in innovation (home infusion programs, digital monitoring of patients), research with a strong program of clinical trials (phase 1-4) and translational research and teaching (medical students and residents). The translational research program is very strong with joint laboratory groups lead by our oncologists with the aim of bring science from the bench to the bedside. See: here and here

Facilities

The care of patients with neoplasms is completely covered by the departments in our hospital. We have the diagnostic departments (including NGS for tumor and biopsy and all orthogonal testing available for biomarkers), radiology with interventional capacities, surgical oncology departments, highly specialised radiotherapy with the newer technologies, and a clinical trials unit with expertise in phase 1-4 trials. We also have a satellite unit with a palliative care department tightly linked to the medical oncology department.
