Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 infection, it is not possible to proceed with the ESMO Breast Cancer 2020 in its original format.

An ESMO event on breast cancer will happen in a brand-new format—the  ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting 2020 - 23-24 May. Please find the official ESMO Breast Cancer 2020 Coronavirus Update.


1. Will I be reimbursed for registration fees related to the cancelled ESMO Breast Cancer 2020?

Yes, delegates who had already paid their registration fee will be reimbursed in full.

Individual delegates will be contacted directly by the ESMO Registration Unit. Those registered by another person as a part of a group should be contacted by their group leaders.

2. How can I register to the ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting 2020 and what is the registration fee?

You will need to have an account with ESMO and go through the registration process in order to access the virtual meeting. Should you not already have an ESMO account, we encourage you to create one now to facilitate registration to the virtual meeting. Participation in the ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting 2020 is free of charge and the registration system will be open by the end of April 2020. We kindly suggest you check for updates regularly on the meeting website.

3. If I was already registered for the ESMO Breast Cancer 2020 will I need to re-register for the virtual meeting?

Yes, you will need to re-register. The ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting 2020 is a new meeting with a new date and new format, therefore; we require a new registration. The registration system will be open by the end of April 2020.

4. Can anyone register for the ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting 2020?

Yes, anyone interested in the virtual meeting can register.

5. Can I register for ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting 2020 as part of a group?

Yes, Third Party Registration will be available for Group leaders who wish to register other delegates for the meeting. Please note that the registration system will be open by the end of April 2020.


6. What will the format be of the new virtual meeting?

The brand-new format will offer live sessions with opportunities for online interaction between presenters and participants who will be able to address faculty with their questions.

Three virtual sessions will feature much of the original ESMO Breast Cancer 2020 programme. Sessions will start at 12:00 Central European Summer Time and run in parallel until early evening on both 23 and 24 May. An interactive chat feature in two of the rooms will facilitate interaction with the ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting Faculty.

e-Posters and satellite symposia will be available on demand during the meeting days.

7. What will happen with the accepted abstracts for the cancelled ESMO Breast Cancer 2020?

All abstracts that were accepted for presentation at the cancelled ESMO Breast Cancer 2020 will remain in the ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting programme and will be published in the official abstract book (a supplement to Annals of Oncology).

All presenters were given the opportunity to withdraw their abstract(s) by 09:00 CEST on Wednesday 8 April 2020.  

8. Will there still be educational sessions at the virtual meeting?

Yes, the ESMO Breast Cancer Virtual Meeting programme will offer most of the original educational programme, and all of the scientific programme (unless ESMO was advised to the contrary – please see point 8 above).

Virtual Meeting Webcasts

9. Will it be possible to view the Virtual Meeting after it takes place?

The congress webcast will include all the sessions of the official programme, where speaker permission is granted, and will be available for ESMO Members on OncologyPRO. 

10. Will I still get the ESMO Mora credits for the virtual meeting?

The ESMO Breast Virtual Meeting 2020 programme has been submitted for ESMO-MORA category 1 points accreditation. Further details will be posted as they become available.

Embargo policy

The abstract embargo release will remain as scheduled, with the majority of abstracts becoming available online at 12:00 CEST on 4 May 2020. Special cases exist for abstracts accepted as LBA and/or selected for the official ESMO Breast Press programme.

Travel and Accommodation

12. Will ESMO refund flight and hotel reservations made for the cancelled ESMO Breast Cancer 2020?

Participants are responsible for cancelling their airline tickets. As airline have their own refund policies, we encourage you speak directly to the airline. If you booked your accommodation through ESMO’s official housing agency K.I.T. Group GmbH, please contact them at esmo2020@kit-group.org for assistance with cancellation for your hotel room. As outlined in the ESMO Meeting Registration Terms and Conditions, normal caution should be exercised by all participants and ESMO recommends individuals invest in adequate personal, health and travel insurance.
