Sessions for Young Oncologists at National Meetings

Young Oncologist initiatives also involve, when possible, local Young Oncologist Committee Members organising specific Young Oncologist Sessions or presentations at a national level.

These presentations will most often give an overview of what you can gain from an international orientation to your career and will contain practical detail about fellowships, working abroad, choosing career path, etc.

The first day of the Portuguese National Symposia SPO 2016 - Reflections for the Future (17-19 Nov 2016) will be dedicated to young oncologists sessions:

  • Session III - Is it possible to constitute collaborative research groups in Portugal?
  • Session IV - Professional careers in oncology
  • Session V - 2017 initiatives from young oncologists

2nd Portuguese Master Course in Clinical Oncology

Portuguese Master Course in Clinical Oncology May 2016 120x150px

This course targets residents in the last formative years and young specialists in Medical Oncology and other medical specialties directly involved in the diagnostic and therapeutic process of the cancer patient. The main objective is a general review of the most important topics of Oncology with a clinical orientation, favouring informal discussion between the speakers and the trainees. The course is limited to 20 attendees. Selection is based on a motivation letter and submission of a clinical case abstract, out of which six will be selected for presentation and discussion during the course.

  • Tuesday, 10 May - head and neck cancer
  • Wednesday, 11 May - breast and  gynaecologic cancer
  • Thursday 12 May -  urologic tumours and  rare tumours
  • Friday 13 May - rare tumours (continued), skin cancers and lung cancer
  • Saturday 14 May - gastrointestinal and hepato-bilio-pancreatic cancers

The session was chaired by Young Oncologists Committee (YOC) members Mila Petrova (Bulgaria) and Raffaele Califano (UK)

Raffaele Califano presented “Overcoming resistance to first-/second-generation EGFR-TKIs and ALK-inhibitors in oncogene-addicted advanced NSCLC?” and former YOC member Giannis Mountzios (Greece) discussed “Novel therapies for advanced squamous cell carcinoma”.

17 April 2015, 08:00 - 08:50, Young Oncologist Session: Immunotherapy and translational research
The session was chaired by Matthew Krebs (UK) and YOC member Jesus Corral (Spain)

“Immune-checkpoint blockade for the treatment of advanced NSCLC” was covered by Jesus Corral, while Matthew Krebs presented on the topic “Promises and pitfalls of liquid biopsy for the molecular portrait and monitoring of treatment response in NSCLC”.

ESMO Young Oncologists: Raffaele Califano (UK) – Committee chair, Jesus Corral (ES) – Committee member, and Lotte Moser (PT) participated in a debate session during the SEOM. The session brought together senior members of Spanish cooperative groups (breast-GEICAM, lung-GECP and colorectal-TTD) and young oncologists, to discuss the role of young oncologists in the collaboration groups.

This ESMO session was co-chaired by YOC member Erika Martinelli (IT), who presented 'Beyond EGFR and VEGFR inhibitors: Targeting the RAS/RAF/MEK and alternative pathway in CRC' and spoke about the ESMO Young Oncologists Committee. In the same session, YOC member Camilla Qvortrup (DK) presented on 'The impact on our clinical practice after the drug approval of new targeted agents in mCRC', while ESMO Executive Board member and Educational Committee chair Jean-Yves Douillard spoke about why it is important to invest in Young Medical Oncologists.
