History

Our palliative care center is part of the Klinikum Ernst von Bergmann a hospital providing specialist care and comprehensive range of medical services in more than 38 clinics and specialist departments with a strong focus on patients with cancer.

The Ernst von Bergmann Clinic is a municipal hospital in Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg in Germany. It is operated in the form of a non-profit limited liability company and, according to the number of beds, is the second largest specialist hospital in the state of Brandenburg. The hospital has about 1100 beds and is an academic teaching hospital of the HMU (Health and Medical University).

Profile

The Department for Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine is the largest specialist department for hematology and oncology in the region of Brandenburg. We have three different wards with a total of about 56 beds and an outpatient ward including ambulatory application of chemotherapies. We offer all types of cancer treatment including autologic stem cell transplantation.

Specialities

Areas of specialisation in hematology include lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and acute leukemias.

In the oncology spectrum, there is great expertise in lung carcinomas, gastrointestinal cancer and head and neck tumors.

Furthermore our Head of Department Prof Dr Karin Jordan is coordinator of the evidence based German S3 guideline on Supportive Care in Oncological Patients and first author of the ESMO position paper on supportive and palliative care.

Palliative and Supportive Care

We offer patient-centred care, which include supportive and palliative care measurement from time of the diagnosis and throughout the continuum of disease. Our multidisciplinary team address the multiple needs an d varying needs of our patients. Our palliative care unit is a stand-alone unit with 8 beds (5 rooms) and is staffed by 2 physicians (oncologist and neurologist) with additional designation of palliative medicine. Among others (e.g. psychooncologist, cleric, social-worker, physiotherapist) , 7 employees have the additional qualification "Palli Care", 1 employee is an oncological nurse, 1 further employee has the additional qualification "Pain Nurse".
