General Description
INT - Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano (National Cancer Institute of Milan) INT is a national and international reference center for both high-incidence and
rare and pediatric cancers. It is classified as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by OECI (Organization of European Cancer Institutes); it is the coordinator of several European projects funded by the EU and it is a member of the Cancer Core Europe consortium.
By hosting 280 university postgraduates, the Institute also deals with staff training and education, didactic activities formalized through partnerships and agreements with universities.
Expertise
The gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Team of INT has a long-lasting experience in the setting of GI cancers, since INT represents a referral center and the GI unit is endowed with a high-level expertise in studying and treating upper and lower GI cancers. The team has a leading role in Italian and international oncology networks. Of note, our team has designed, developed and conducted several past and ongoing, mono and multicenter trials in GI cancers aimed at improving the outcome of patients, such as the Valentino (NCT02476045), CAPTEM (NCT02414009), MAYA (NCT03832621), FLIRT-Bev (NCT04689347), ERASE-TMZ (NCT05031975) for colorectal cancer. Moreover, in collaboration with the GONO Foundation, we designed the INFINITY (NCT04817826), the MERCURY study (NCT05594290) and the PURITY study (NCT06037980) study in localized gastric cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma and biliary tract cancer, respectively.
We also have strong background for translational studies, as testified by various high level publications.
There are multiple multidisciplinary teams working on all kinds of GI tract cancers, including a multidisciplinary team focused on NET, that is certified by ENETS as Center of excellence for neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Facilities
The GI oncology Unit has 9 medical oncologist and 1 case manager, who are dedicated to clinical activity and clinical research. It also has 6 clinical research coordinators and 2 research nurses dedicated to both sponsored and no-profit clinical trials management.
There are 3 outpatient visit rooms and 1 medical oncologist is always dedicated to inpatient activity.
Overall, INT has >400 beds, 4 clinical departments (surgical oncology, medical oncology and hematology, diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy, services and advanced diagnostics) and 2 research departments with dedicated labs.
