Maria-João Cardoso is Head Breast Surgeon at the Champalimaud Foundation Breast Unit, in Lisbon Portugal and Associate Professor of the University of Lisbon Faculty of Medicine. Her undergraduate studies were undertaken at the Porto Faculty of Medicine, in Portugal. She dedicated her carrier to breast surgery. She holds a PhD in Medicine from the Porto University.

She is the co-coordinator of the Breast Research group at INESC Porto. She is the Coordinator and PI of the EU Horizon 2022 funded CINDERELLA Project [HORIZON-HLTH-2021-DISEASE-04-04. HORIZON-RIA. Proposal number 101057389], Until 2023, she has published more than 110 papers on international journals, with an h index of 39 and also co-authored more than 200 full communications in major national and international conferences. She is a member of the editorial board of The Breast and of The International Journal of Breast Cancer and reviewer of several topic international journals. Since 2011 she is president of a Support Centre for Breast Cancer Patients, Mama Help, cooperating actively in European advocacy training like EUROPA DONNA. She is a member of the board of the Portuguese Society of Senology.of the EUSOMA Executive Committee and of the Faculty of ESO and ESMO.
