The Current and Future Role of the Medical Oncologist in the Professional Care for Cancer Patients

The ESMO Position Paper on medical oncology aims to summarise the multifarious and vital contributions of medical oncology and medical oncologists to today’s and tomorrow’s professional cancer care.

As a core member of the multidisciplinary team, and based on a comprehensive and systemic approach to cancer treatment and care, well-trained, highly-skilled and continuously-educated medical oncologists contribute to cancer diagnosis, treatment and research. They also ensure that patients benefit from medical progress and from an evidence-based, safe and cost-effective use of cancer drugs, while maintaining a good quality of life.

The Position Paper also demonstrates that ESMO and its partners have a clear position on the role of the profession and the professionals they represent.
