Press Release: First Oncology Society Partnership for New ESMO Open Access Journal

AIOM adopts ESMO Open as its scientific journal
05 Jul 2016

Lugano - ESMO, the leading European professional organisation for medical oncology, is delighted to announce that the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) has formally adopted ESMO Open as its scientific journal.

ESMO Open Editor-in-Chief Christoph Zielinski says: “AIOM was the first medical oncology society with which ESMO signed a reciprocal membership agreement so it is fitting that they are the inaugural partner for our new open access online journal. Oncology research and practice in Italy is recognised as being at the forefront of our profession so we are looking forward to AIOM members using the journal’s open access format to drive wider visibility of their own research as well as learning about studies undertaken by fellow professionals around the world.”

ESMO has a long-standing association with the Italian oncology community. Not only is current President Fortunato Ciardiello from Italy, but 45 of its Faculty members and 7% of its membership base are Italian, making this link a further reinforcement of the strong bond between the two organisations.

Continues Zielinski: “We are looking forward to setting up more partnerships for ESMO Open with the other societies with which we have reciprocal membership agreements and are welcoming approaches from the oncology community across the globe.”

Silvia Novello, ESMO Open editor for AIOM, Associate Professor Department of Oncology at the University of Turin, adds: “AIOM has long collaborated with other national and international scientific societies. Our partnership with ESMO Open represents a great opportunity for AIOM and seals the valuable relationship which we have established over the years. We are looking forward to showcasing some of our work through ESMO Open in the future.”

Since launching in January 2016, ESMO Open has quickly established itself as a significant player in the oncology world and is aiming to be indexed in the major databases at the earliest opportunity. Over 40 high-quality articles covering the breadth of oncology research and practice have been published alongside podcasts and educational videos. Focusing on innovative clinical and translational cancer research, oncology policy and education, submissions to ESMO Open can be made at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/esmoopen

Carmine Pinto, AIOM President concludes: “The association with ESMO Open will provide a channel for AIOM members to share opinions and compare different oncology strategies through direct access to a European oncology journal publishing innovative clinical and translational research, along with educational articles and information on ESMO policies.”

About AIOM

The Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) hosts all of those working in the field of oncology in Italy. It brings together more than 2,500 medical oncologists and is coordinated by an Executive Council of 13 members. From 1973, when a group of pioneers founded the Italian Association of Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Milan, the scientific and institutional influence of AIOM has increased: the Society is now able to produce instruments and documents, which can be used for an effective dialogue both at the national - in particular with the Ministry of Health and the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) - and regional level, where engagement is even more intense. The role of AIOM at national level is extremely relevant for the oncology community, mainly related to the Italian Oncology Guidelines, but not only.

ESMO and AIOM signed a reciprocal agreement in 2010 to widen the range and improve the quality of services provided to their members. All oncology professionals who subscribe for Full Membership to both ESMO and AIOM at the same time will receive the first year of membership for free and benefit from reduced annual membership fees in subsequent years.
