As of 2006 the Jewish General Hospital(JGH) offers to men and women living with cancer and their family access to one of the largest groups of clinicians in oncology and palliative care in Canada.   The Gerald and Marjorie Bronfman Division of Palliative Care was created in 2000 within the Department of Oncology of our institution to support a full integration of supportive care and palliative care within the spectrum of oncological care. Instead of developing palliative care services in parallel to the existing cancer care services, we have chosen to fully integrate ambulatory palliative care clinics within the existing oncological ambulatory clinics of the JGH, and we are now offering integrated supportive care | palliative care services within the therapeutic teams of:

  •     medical and haemato-oncology
  •     radio-oncology
  •     gynaecology-oncology
  •     urology prostate cancer
  •     pulmonary oncology
  •     family medicine

The Division also offers a consultation-liaison service to all in-patient units within the hospital as well as a dedicated 17 bed Palliative Care Unit located within the main building of the hospital to facilitate access to all clinical services and a joint follow-up by the medical oncologists and the palliative care physicians.  Palliative care expertise is available to all cancer patients in real-time within our institution and the Palliative Care Division offers a 7 day | 24 hrs on-call system for patients and families who are receiving home palliative care. The physician and nurse members of the Gerald and Marjorie Bronfman Palliative Care Division are involved in various research projects from evaluation of novel analgesics to quality of life studies.  The Jewish General Hospital is also home to the research division of Palliative Care McGill.
