History
In 2009 an Oncology Centre (Polo Oncologico) was created within the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana. In 2012 a Dedicated Supportive Care Service was created within the Polo Oncologico in order to give cancer patients timely supportive and palliative care in every moment of their cancer care pathway.
Profile
The Oncology Centre (Polo Oncologico) consists of two units of Medical Oncology with an outpatient ward, a day hospital service for treatment administration, and an inpatient ward. The activity of the two Medical Oncology Units is supported by a dedicated Supportive and Palliative Care Service, which coordinates all the supportive care given to patients throughout their cancer care pathway and collaborates with the physicians of the other wards of Polo Oncologico.
Specialities
Within the Polo Oncologico we take care of patients affected by any kind of solid tumours. Patients are followed up from their diagnosis throughout all their cancer care pathway. Supportive and Palliative Care is offered in every stage of their disease in order to offer the best cancer care possible.
Palliative and Supportive Care
A dedicated Supportive and Palliative Care service is present within the Polo Oncologico. This service is active Monday to Saturday and offers palliative and supportive care in an outpatient setting. In case of severe problems the service can also organize admissions of patients to the inpatient ward or to other medical and surgical inpatient wards. The service collaborates with several specialists (palliative care specialists, pain therapy specialists, nutritionists, psychologists, endocrinologists, dermatologists, cardiologists) in order to offer the best supportive care to cancer patients.
