The history of  Sacro Cuore-Don Calabria  Hospital, financed by a catholic institute called Opera Don Calabria, started in 1933 as an elder’s asylum. In the Forties it turned into an qualified hospital and in 1970 it was recognized as a public facility. Our Medical Oncology Division was created in 1995, the Department in 2001 and the Palliative Care Unit in 2007.


The Hospital has:

  • 18 certified divisions with about 500 beds,
  • 210 specialists, approx. 450 nurses and a total of non medical-staff of 1220,
  • technical equipment: high definition TAC, MRI, scintigraphy; IORT for breast cancer

The Oncology  Division has:

  • 18 beds, 9 for acute  (1 single room), 9 for palliative care (5 single rooms); 16 beds in D.H,
  • 1 director and 7 oncologists, 18 nurses, 1 data-manager, 1 psycho-oncologist ,1 consultant psychiatrist. 


Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;  Cardiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology; Medicine  and Geriatrics, Gastroenterology,  Neurology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Traumatology; Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ORL, Paediatrics, Pathology, Rehabilitation  ( medulla and cerebral-injured), Tropical Medicine, Urology; General, Vascular, Plastic Surgery.

Palliative and Supportive Care

Medical oncologists of our Department coordinate a multi-professional team who take care of patients affected by more frequent cancers (weekly specific pathology meetings are programmed).
The Palliative Care Unit (PCU)  comprises of an oncologist expert in supportive care, dedicated nurses, consultant psychiatrist, spiritual assistant; the collaboration is regular with anaesthetist experienced pain therapy, dietician, physiatrists and physiotherapists highly specialized. Our PCU gives particular attention to the optimal management of end-of-life symptoms.
