Centre history

St. Josefs Hospital was founded in 1861 as an orphanage. Since 1872 the Hospital was under the auspices of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo. It provided specialized inpatient cancer care since 1960s and an Outpatient Cancer Care since 1980s. Outpatient Palliative Care was established in 2007. An inpatient Palliative Care Team since 2008 is part of any palliative treatment and care for inpatients.

The Team is part of the Palliative Care Network in Potsdam since 2009 We offer specialised Pain Management for Cancer Patients since 2009. Additionally there is an interdisciplinary Palliative Service since 2016, extending the delivery of palliative care to patients in all departments of St. Josefs Hospital.

The Medical Clinic comprises Departments of Cardiology, Hamatology/Oncology & Palliative Care, Gastroenterology and diabetology. The Department of Hematology/Oncology & Palliative Care offers treatment for the full range of oncologic and hematologic diseases with a focus on solid tumors and gastrointestinal cancer. An Outpatient treatment center is closely connected, more than 1200 patients are treated. The Palliative Care Team and Palliative Care Service comprise: Psychooncology, Pain specialists, Oncologists, Spezialized Nurses, Nutritional support, Social Sercices, Pastoral Care , Physiotherapists. Palliative Care Training is provided continuously for nurses, doctors and students. Weekly Tumor Boards and Pain Boards are established.

Areas of specialisation

A Gastrointestinal Cancer Centre was established in 2008. In addition we initiated the first specialized outpatient teatment for patients with gastrointestinal cancer (Ambulante Spezialfachärztliche Versorgung -ASV) in Brandenburg. The Oncology unit is a member of the Potsdam Tumorboard and Palliative Care Network Potsdam. Hereditary Cancer receive special diagnostic and treatment. A Specialised Pain Management in tumor Patients was established on an inpatient and outpatient basis in close cooperation with pain specialists at St. Josefs-Hospital and in ambulant care.

Palliative and supportive care

All Patients are screened on admission for special need of palliative treatment and care. Palliative Care Service is permanently available and medical findings of primary palliative assessments are transferred to detailled treatment schedules for each patient within the first 24 hours of hospitalization. Care is given by a team of specially trained nurses and physicians, being supported by a multiprofessional team of palliative caregivers. There are weekly team meetings where all inpatients are discussed and strategies of care are fixed. Inpatient palliative care is continued by ambulant care teams without delay and loss of information due to close interactions between Palliatve Care Service and specialized ambulant palliative care (SAPV).
