History

Sheba Medical Center was established on 1948. It is the largest academic hospital in Israel. The medical center includes a general hospital, children's hospital and rehabilitation hospital. It is named after Dr. Haim Sheba, the 1st director of the hospital, who served as an example and source of inspiration for humanistic and professional medicine which remain the leading values of the center.  It is a center of excellence in many clinical disciplines as well as in medical research.

The Oncology Institute at Sheba Medical Center is known for its strong emphasis on empathic and compassionate care of cancer patients. At the same time, the cancer center is promoting very high professionalism in clinical medicine and excellence in medical research. The cancer center comprises all the elements of cancer-patients care, including:

Specialities

The Cancer Center includes a Radiation-Oncology institute which is the largest in Israel. The Radiation-Oncology Institutes performs the most sophisticated radiation treatment alongside with innumerable palliative-radiation therapies every day.

The Center has a large clinical-research unit that allows patients to enroll to all phases of clinical-studies in almost every cancer subtype. Currently, hundreds of studies are handled by the team of the unit.

The Ella institute for melanoma patients is well known for its leadership in the care of melanoma patients as well as for its achievements in research in the field of immunotherapy.

Palliative and Supportive Care

Sheba Medical Center had in-patients hospice unit for many years. Approximately 3 years ago a dedicated palliative and supportive care unit was established in the oncology institute. The unit implemented multidisciplinary supportive care for patients with advanced cancer along the entire disease trajectory and in every clinical situation. It includes a clinic for out-patients, consult service for hospitalized patients, caregiver clinic, phone-based consult service during and after work hours and a day-care for acute palliative-care interventions. The staff is committed both to direct patient care as well as to the education of medical teams all around the medical center.
