Mitsubishi Kyoto Hospital - Department of Clinical Oncology and Palliative Medicine

History

The Mitsubishi Kyoto Hospital was established in 1946. It is located in West Kyoto, Japan. The Department of Clinical Oncology was established at the Mitsubishi Kyoto Hospital in 2008, while the Clinical Oncology and Palliative Medicine Centre was established in 2012, and the Palliative Care Unit (PCU) in 2016.

Profile

Our center has four physicians who can provide both general oncologic care that includes therapeutic anti-cancer agents and palliative care for patients with different types of cancer. We have 10 beds for outpatients who are administered anti-cancer agents. On a monthly basis, about 80 patients are treated. The center is staffed by a certified nurse and a special oncology nurse. We also have 5 beds for inpatients that are given special care to address adverse effects of anti-cancer agents. We have 14 beds for cancer patients in the PCU, which is staffed by a certified nurse and a palliative care nurse.

Specialities

There are three oncology centers and only one PCU in our medical area. We provide both oncologic and palliative care simultaneously, without a break. There was few institute which can provide both oncologic and special palliative care as one of the department even in whole Japan. Our hospital operates as a general hospital in the region, rather than as a facility specialized in cancer treatment. However, we hold medical conferences and lectures for regional medical staff in our area as an institution specialized in palliative and oncologic care. We also actively conduct clinical research both on our own and as part of multicenter studies.

Palliative and Supportive Care

The Palliative Care Team (PCT) is coordinated by the medical staff at our hospital, comprising physicians, clinical psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, clinical chaplains, certified palliative nurses, and pharmacists. Our PCT provides supportive care on an ongoing basis not only for cancer patients, but also for non-cancer patients. We provide continued palliative care for cancer patients who have intolerable symptoms by admitting them into the PCU.
