The cancer and palliative care services at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Foundation Trust were established in 1998 and have been developed in tandem.  The team includes oncologists, palliative care physicians, clinical nurse specialists in palliative care and tumour site specific oncology as well as the cancer information and support manager.  The team is supported by the clinical cancer services manager and lead nurse and administrative team to ensure a smooth patient pathway.


Holistic and integrated approach to cancer management which is supported by a robust multi-disciplinary team who meet weekly to assess the needs of the patients in a physical, psychological and emotional sense and agree the most appropriate management.

  •     Provides a seamless service across hospital and community settings
  •     Inpatient care for symptom control is provided on two designated wards where they have a high number of oncology patients and the staff have experience in symptom control
  •     The centre has successfully implemented the Liverpool Care Pathway for the dying (LCP) in all adult areas of the Trust
  •     The Macmillan cancer information centre provides information, support and complementary therapies and the team will assess for onward referral to clinical psychology support


The centre specialises in the oncological management and care of patients with lung cancer, HIV associated malignancy, urological and haematological malignancies.  The centre provides diagnostic services for the majority of other common cancers sharing care with other local cancer centres where appropriate.  The recently developed acute oncology service specialises in the management of acute presentations of cancer or the effects of cancer treatment.  The centre has a developing role in clinical trial and is working with the West London Cancer Research Network to develop a portfolio of clinical trial activity.  The consultant in palliative medicine runs a joint clinic in conjunction with a consultant in pain management specialising in the management of HIV related neuropathy.

Palliative and supportive care

The Trust specialist palliative care team comprises of a consultant in palliative medicine, 2 clinical nurse specialists in palliative care and is supported by a team of doctors in training, occupational and physiotherapy team.  The team works closely with the Trust’s multi-faith chaplaincy team, a member of which attends the weekly Multi-disciplinary team meeting.  The specialist palliative care team is represented in the core membership of all cancer site specific Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT) except dermato-oncology.   The team work across the organisation and offer a comprehensive and holistic symptom assessment and support service for both patients and their family or carers.  They also work to ensure a seamless service into primary care liaising with specialist palliative care services in the community as well as the local hospice unit.
