History

Created in 1955, the Oscar Lambret Center is the Center of reference for research and treatment of cancer in the North of France (6 million of inhabitants). The Oscar Lambret Center is member of the Unicancer group that gather the 18 French Comprehensive Cancer Centers. The UniCancer model is based on multi-disciplinarity, personalization of treatments, global and supportive care and research-healthcare continuum, with the aim to offer a rapid and safe access to therapeutic innovations to patients. The key-Figures are: 900 employees, 120 physicians, 180 beds and seats, 22,000 patients treated year including 7,000 new patients, and 55,000 consultations. 

Profile

The Medical Oncology Department have been created in January 2019. This department includes 22 senior physicians (medical oncologists, gynecologists, pneumologist, gastro-enterologists, internist, neurologist) and 22 interns. This department includes 5 units: one outpatient clinic (18 beds and 14 seats for chemotherapy and immunotherapy, about 110 patients per day), 4 units for conventional hospitalization (with a total of 45 beds). These units are managed by general practitioners with the help of all the team of supportive and palliative care. In 2019, this medical oncology department is labelled by the French Cancer Institute for the management of rare cancers (sarcomas, thymic tumors, rare gynecological cancers ...). furthermore, Prof Nicolas PENEL oversees Oncology training in the medical school of Lille University.

We treat patients with solid tumors of different ages (from children to elderly), including: 

  • Breast cancers (about 1000 cases per year)
  • Gynecological cancers (about 700 cases per year)
  • Digestive cancers (about 600 cases per year)
  • Head and neck cancers (about 600 cases per year)
  • Urological cancers (about 400 cases per year)
  • Sarcoma (about 250 cases per year) ...

Global care implies the help of Pharmacy Department, Bio-Pathology Department, Imaging and nuclear medicine department, Radiotherapy Department, Surgery Department, Medical Oncology Department, Oncology Unit for children and young adults, Supportive Care Coordination and the Palliative Care Unit
More than 150 clinical studies are open to recruitment with 800 patients enrolled yearly. We are also sponsor of 30 clinical trials conducted in France and Europe. In 2015, the Oscar Lambret Cancer Center had been labelled by the French National Cancer Institute as "Research Center accredited for Early Phase Clinical Study".

Palliative and Supportive Care

The Palliative Care Unit was created in 1998, with 3 activities: conventional hospitalization unit (12 beds), outpatient consultations and an intra-hospital mobile palliative care unit. The medical team includes 3 senior physicians, 4 assistant and interns. Furthermore, Dr Vincent Gamblin oversees
"palliative medicine" training in Medical School of Lille University.

Since 2013, supportive care is coordinated between several professionals: dieticians, medical nutritionist, onco-psychiatrists, psychologists, physiotherapists, socio-esthetician, algologists, nurses specialized in therapeutic education, stoma therapist, sports instructor, social worker. There are also 4 general practitioners, geriatric, physical medicine/rehabilitation, rheumatology, sexology and fertility preservation consultations. A multidisciplinary consultation meeting for the management of chronic stubborn pain is organized every two weeks. Lastly, since 2014, there is a mobile multi-professional supportive care team to care for children and young adults. In 2018, the Oscar Lambret Cancer Center had been labelled by French Authorities as referral center for management of pain in cancer patients.
