History

The palliative care services were established in 2004. They are integrated into the service of the Medical Hospital 5 in Nürnberg and serve a population of over 1 Million inhabitants in the region.

Profile

The Medical Hospital 5 is one of seven hospitals for internal medicine within the Nürnberg communal hospital centre, the largest communal hospital centre in Germany. Comprising of three general wards (98 beds), two specialised wards for intensive care and bone marrow/stem cell transplantation (15 beds), the palliative care unit (21 beds) and outpatient facilities.
Many therapies are offered in close cooperation with other specialities, in the communal hospital centre, within national and international initiatives and studies to improve the quality of health care. A study group for clinical research and a work group for complementary and alternative medicine are an integrated part of the hospital services.
The architecture of the hospital and the palliative care unit is light, bright and colourful with plants to create a comfortable atmosphere amidst the modern technical equipment.

  • General internal medicine and palliative care
  • Haematology, hemostasiology, infectiology, tropical medicine
  • Oncology, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation

Palliative and supportive care

The palliative care unit offers care and support for people with severe illnesses. Palliative care intends to maintain quality of life by controlling physical symptoms, offering psychological support and addressing emotional, social and spiritual needs; supporting both the person with the illness and their nearest carers and significant others.
Women and men with different diagnoses, e.g. cancer, AIDS or neurological diseases, can be admitted to the ward. In and out patient care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, psycho-oncologists, music therapists and also pastoral and spiritual care, if desired.
