Institut Català d’Oncologia Badalona (ICO Badalona) is integrated in a University General Hospital, Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona, a major city in greater Barcelona. ICO Badalona is one of the 3 centers of the Institut Català d'Oncologia, a multicentric comprehensive cancer centre, owned by the Catalan Department of Health. ICO Badalona started to work in 2003 and it is the referral oncologic centre for an area of more than 800.000 inhabitants.
- ICO Badalona consists of an in-patient Onco-Haematological ward with 43 beds (18 Medical Oncology, 17 Clinical Haematology, 6 Palliative Care and 2 Radiotherapic Oncology) distributed in 16 double rooms and 11 single rooms.
- 150 staff members offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary oncologic attention including direct assistance to patients, translational research, laboratory issues, cancer education and training.
- ICO Badalona provides an Onco-Haematological ward, a chemotherapy administration facility with 26 treatment points, laboratories for citologic, biochemical and haematological studies and translational research laboratories as well as administrative, teaching and data manager facilities.
- The services provided to patient are Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Haematology, Palliative Care, Social Work, Psycho-oncology, Nutrition and all those of our partner General Hospital including Emergency Care, General Surgery, Neurosurgery among others.
The cancer centre consists in 4 different services: Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Clinical Haematology and Integral Supportive Service. The Integral Supportive Service (ISS) consists in: Palliative Care Service, Social Work Unit, Psycho-Oncology Unit and Nutrition Unit.
Palliative and supportive care
Palliative Care service is a part of the Integral Supportive Service (SSI). SSI provides all the supportive attention to the patient including Palliative Care Service, Social Work Unit, Psycho-Oncology Unit, and Nutrition Unit. 9 staff members with verified expertise in palliative and supportive care work at the SSI (2 physicians, 1 nurse, 2 social workers, 2 psycho-oncologists and 2 nutritionists).
We collaborate with numerous research and teaching issues such as the Official Master Training Program in Palliative Care of the Universitat de Barcelona, the Psycho-oncology Master of Universitat de Barcelona, the Master project of Nutrition and Metabolism of Universitat de Barcelona and the Social and Family Master of Universitat de Barcelona.
