History

Cork University Hospital (CUH) is a model 4 tertiary referral centre for specialised services including medical and radiation oncology and haematology. CUH is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and is the principal teaching hospital attached to the School of Medicine at University College Cork. CUH is a public hospital managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and is a member of both the South/South West Hospital Group (SSWHG) and the Cork University Hospital Group (CUHG), which also includes Mallow and Bantry General Hospitals. The Health Research Board has designated the CUH as a Clinical Trials Centre. The Executive Management Board (EMB) is comprised of the CEO, the Chair, the Director of Nursing, and five Clinical Directors.

Profile

CUH is the largest university teaching hospital in Cork City and the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in the Republic of Ireland. CUH has 25,500 inpatient admissions, 27,000 day cases, and 58,000 emergency cases (A&E) annually, making it one of the busiest hospitals in the country. CUH has an annual budget of nearly €300 million and employs in excess of 4,000 staff.

The Division of Oncology provides services in Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Palliative Care and Clinical Haematology. The division functions through the regional cancer strategy and links to Surgical Oncology (for example, the Symptomatic Breast Service), which enables us to provide a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Radiation Oncology is a tertiary referral centre and provides services for the region with a population of approximately 1.1 million and treatment is administered on a mainly outpatient basis. However, we also provide an inpatient service. Medical Oncology provides a pan-city service by means of a Chemotherapy Day Unit, as well as on an inpatient basis. The Clinical Haematology Unit provides both inpatient and outpatient services, along with a Day Unit Service for malignant and non-malignant Haematology. Clinical trials unit has been in CUH coordinates a large portfolio in Oncology, Haematology and Radiotherapy. Palliative Care provides an inpatient service at CUH. This service is part of an integrated care model with the Home Care Service and Marymount Hospice.

Other services offered at CUH include all the major medical specialities and a range of surgical specialities including cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, gynaecologic, plastic and reconstructive, maxillofacial, breast and colorectal, along with interventional radiology, interventional pain management.
