Getting to know each other is the best first step on the way to making a difference together!
Two hundred enthusiastic participants gathered for the Young Oncologists Networking Evening on Saturday 9 September during the ESMO Congress 2017 in Madrid, with the aim to make new contacts and share experiences with peers from around the world.
Jointly hosted at Madrid’s Royal Theatre with a view to the royal castle, ESMO’s Young Oncologists Committee, the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), the Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM) and the Asociación Española de Investigación sobre el Cáncer (ASEICA) brought together eager young minds representing the many facets of cancer care and uniting basic science and the clinic.
Attracting a capacity crowd, the evening was a resounding success and provided many young delegates with the ideal opportunity to take their first step towards making a difference together.
This year a record number of 36 countries were represented – mainly from Europe, but we also had the pleasure of welcoming YOs from Brazil, USA, Canada, Australia, Egypt, India, Iran, Bangladesh and Japan.
Senior representatives from the four societies joined the YOs and addressed the participants emphasising the importance of the young generation’s implication in the international world of oncology.

About ESMO YOC
The ESMO Young Oncologists Committee provides opportunities to strengthen young oncologists (YO’s) skills, knowledge and expertise, while providing a platform for networking with other medical oncologists and oncology professionals. ESMO defines YOs as oncologists under the age of 40. The YOC is headed by a chairperson appointed by the ESMO Executive Board, and currently has 15 committee members. An important part of the educational offer of the YOC is the YO Track at the ESMO Annual Congress. Since its launch in 2002, the YO Track has gone from strength to strength, with popular activities such as the YO Masterclass, Breakfast Sessions, Mentorship session and the Vesalius Talk. The YOC are continually establishing new projects, past achievements include the ESMO Handbook of Oncological Emergencies in 2005 which launched the ESMO Handbook Series, an internet based Journal Club with review and comments on scientific articles and the Image of the Month collection inviting readers to test their diagnosis skills. In 2012 and 2013, the YOC carried out European-wide data collections, the first on the treatment of NSCLC and the second related to the level of burn-out in young oncologists. An article on the latter survey has been published in Annals of Oncology. In 2003, the YOC developed the Translational Research Unit (TRU) Visits, which are educational events for young oncologists that provide crucial and practical information about the conduct of translational research at leading European research centres, a very popular activity which is now an established part of ESMO’s Fellowship Programme. The YOC has a Facebook group with over 3,000 members which invites YOs worldwide to network and share ideas and experience.
About the EACR
The European Association for Cancer Research is Europe’s professional member association for cancer researchers with over 10,000 members in 101 countries. EACR membership is open to anyone working in or studying cancer research and our members work across the full spectrum of the field, from basic through to translational and clinical research. Our mission is ‘The advancement of cancer research for the public benefit: from basic research to prevention, treatment and care.’ We provide a wide variety of services to our community of members, organise scientific meetings of the highest quality, and facilitate communication and collaboration within the cancer research community. About SEOM
The Spanish Society for Medical Oncology (Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica) is a scientific entity counting more than 2,300 doctors, specialists in medical oncology whose main goal is making progress towards the fight against cancer. SEOM is a reference organisation for Oncology in Spain and ensures that the Services for Medical Oncology provide quality of healthcare, throughout the stimulation of research in this area.
About ASEICA
The Spanish Association of Cancer Research (Asociación Española de investigación sobre el Cáncer) was founded in 1983 to unite all Spanish professionals dedicated to cancer research in all its facets. Most of its more than 400 members are basic researchers or clinicians who are interested in the application of basic research. ASEICA participates in the organisation of scientific activities in collaboration with other societies and investigation institutes. One of its main activity is the biannual ASEICA Congress. ASEICA works to potentiate the links to other scientific societies related to cancer as well as the sanitary authorities, the pharmaceutical industry and means of communication.

The Teatro Real, or Royal Theatre, is one of Spain’s major opera houses.
