General description of the institute
Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, IDIBELL) is a research centre focused on cellular medicine, in which high quality biomedical research takes place with the aim of benefitting people’s health and promoting economic development.
IDIBELL is a joint research initiative set up as a legal entity in 2004 by the Bellvitge University Hospital, the Catalan Institute of Oncology and the University of Barcelona. The institute is located south of Barcelona, in the Health Innovation Park Biopol’H of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
The research facilities are distributed among the Duran I Reynals Hospital, the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Health Sciences campus from University of Barcelona. A key aspect of IDIBELL’s research is its proximity to the patient, due to its location and daily clinical activity of many of its researchers. The real proximity between both excellent clinicians and basic researchers has made translational research a reality in IDIBELL.
Two out of the six research areas of IDIBELL are devoted to cancer research, both from basic and clinical approaches and covering most related medical and biological disciplines and our scientists are well recognised as leading experts in their fields.
