Professor Aamdal received his medical training in Austria (Graz) and Germany (Lübeck/Kiel). Over the following 10 years he did his postdoctoral training at several centres in Norway and focused on medical oncology and radiotherapy. In 1986 he completed his PhD, MD thesis on anticancer treatment in animal models. Since 1987, Professor Aamdal has been based in Oslo, except for a period at the University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama, USA (2003–2004). Since 2002, Prof Aamdal has been Professor of Oncology at the Department of Oncology and, since 2004 Head of the Section for Clinical Cancer Research and Resource Development at Oslo University Hospital. He is been an active member of several international societies, such as, ESMO, ASCO, AACR, focusing on anticancer treatment and cancer research. He is also member of EMA Scientific Advisory Group for Oncology (SAG-O). Over the last 20 years, Professor Aamdal has been the Principal Investigator for a number of international and national clinical trials. In addition to clinical trial involvement, his research interests also include preclinical models. At present, Professor Aamdal’s research is mainly focused on assessing the potential of immunotherapy in cancer therapy. His work to date has generated more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.
