Giovanni Boniolo is Full Professor of Philosophy of Science and Medical Humanities, at the “Dipartimento di Neuroscienze e Riabilitazione”, University of Ferrara, Italy.

In 1981 he gained the Degree in Theoretical Physics and in 1985 the Degree in Philosophy both from the University of Padova, Italy.

He was awarded the Anne Boyksen Fellowship by the Institute for Advanced Study (Technische Universität München) and was later appointed Honorary Ambassador of the same university.

Prof Boniolo has extensively lectured in many Italian, European and non‐European institutions.

He is former Director of the PhD program in “Foundations of life sciences and their ethical consequences”, at the European School of Molecular Medicine (Milan, Italy) and former Director of the Biomedical Humanities Unit, Department of Experimental Oncology, Istituto Europeo di Oncologia (Milan, Italy).

Co‐director and founder of the “European advanced seminars in the Philosophy of Life Science” resulting from the international network of several international universities.

He has been and is consultant of many European research centres and member of the scientific committee of many Italian and European foundations, institutions, journals, etc.

He has served and serves as member or chair of many Italian and European ethics committee

Since 2021, honorary Faculty member of ESCO - College of the European School of Oncology

His research interests are (i) public and individual decision-making, whenever ethical issues are involved; (ii) philosophical foundations of contemporary biomedical research and clinical practice.

Since 2014, he has been Editor in chief of Springer Briefs on Ethical and Legal Issues in Biomedicine and Technology.

Since 2018, he has been the Scientific Director of the Civitas Vitae Research Centre (Rethinking aging) at Fondazione OIC onlus (Padova, Italy)

2017-2023. President of the Accademia dei Concordi (Rovigo, Italy).

2019-2023. Editor-in-chief of History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences.

His work is witnessed by 13 books (plus 12 books edited) and about 200 papers published in international peer reviewed journals.
