These two, three or four days visits are educational events for young oncologists.

Translational Research in Oncology: From Bench to Bedside and Back


15 – 17 May 2019 (three days, two half days and one full day)

Aim and objectives

The Clinical Division of Oncology at the Medical University Vienna is a leading centre for medical oncology and high-output translational research. Next to visiting our facilities, attending fellows will get lectures about cutting edge issues in translational research with a particular focus on immunotherapy and personalised medicine, insights into clinical trial management and mentoring for career development. The visit will furthermore promote networking with faculty staff and international colleagues via socialising events.

The visit will cover

  • From Bench to Bedside – clinical impact by translational research
  • Insights into methods of laboratory and machine-based cancer research
  • Challenges and opportunities of clinical cancer research

Amount and duration

Each awardee will receive 1,000€ to cover travel, local transport and accommodation. The host institute will receive 2,000€ for administration costs.

Application Requirements

Please read the full Guidelines and Application Instructions for TRU Visit Fellowships before starting your application.

Applicants must:

  • Be an ESMO member of 40 years or under at the time of the application
  • Be proficient in English
  • Be an oncologist or in training to become an oncologist, currently working in internal medicine or medical, radiation or surgical oncology

NB: Candidates who have previously participated in an ESMO TRU Visit cannot apply to take part in a second visit and are therefore not eligible.

Application must include

  • Completed online application form
  • Motivation letter
  • Recommendation letter from home institute

Application review process

Applications are reviewed by the ESMO Fellowship Committee which comprises leaders in the oncology field. The committee will evaluate and score all aspects of the application, and in particular focus on:

  • The extent and level of previous education (CV)
  • Motivation letter
  • Other professional training
  • Quality of the application
  • How the acquired information and knowledge will be used in the home institute

Priority will be given to applicants who are not currently working at an institute of excellence as well as to applicants who have no laboratory experience, as the TRU Visit is an introduction to translational research.

Applicants with the highest score will be awarded the fellowship.

Important: All applications must be submitted in English; incomplete applications will not be accepted; applicants will be notified about the result approximately one month after the application deadline.
