ESMO 2017 Press Release: Alberto Bardelli Recognised with the ESMO Translational Research Award

  • Date: 20 Jul 2017

LUGANO, Switzerland, 20 July 2017 –  The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has granted this year’s Translational Research Award to Alberto Bardelli, for his liquid biopsy work in the field of colorectal cancer (CRC).

The Award is presented to candidates who are internationally recognised for outstanding achievements in translational research, and will be presented during the opening session at the ESMO 2017 Congress (8-12 September, Madrid, Spain).

Bardelli is a Professor in the Department of Oncology at the University of Torino, Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Oncology, and deputy Director of the Candiolo Cancer Institute-IRCCS, Torino, Italy.

His translational discoveries in the field of metastatic CRC “have led to paradigm-changing applications in the clinic,” noted Christoph Zielinski, on behalf of the ESMO Fellowship and Award Committee.

“Professor Bardelli is a highly-respected geneticist and world-renowned expert in the field of precision medicine. His innovative work in the area of liquid biopsies has paved the way for optimising diagnosis and treatment options for CRC patients, and made him one of our most outstanding translational research scientists.”

In particular, Bardelli’s exploration of the molecular landscape of response and resistance to CRC treatments has found clinical applicability through the use of liquid biopsies to monitor treatment-response.

Commenting on the award, Bardelli said, “I am thrilled and honoured to receive this award, which acknowledges the work of my entire team of geneticists, molecular biologists, medical oncologists, physicists and mathematicians. In the last five years, our efforts to define how genomic alterations drive tumours, and how oncogenic events affect the ability of cancer cells to evade drugs, have translated into new ideas for clinical trials, which has been extremely gratifying. The ESMO Award for Translational Research energizes me to move forward in this direction and to get even closer to the clinical needs of patients.”
