Support the Cancer Prevention 4 Africa Campaign
ESMO seeks to eradicate cancer at its earliest stages through effective cancer prevention awareness and advocacy campaigns
In Africa, most people have no access to cancer screening, early diagnosis or treatment. Therefore prevention offers the most cost-effective, long-term strategy for reducing the burden of cancer.
In 2011, the Africa Oxford Cancer Foundation (AfrOx), the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the ESMO Emerging Countries Committee, and the ESMO Cancer Prevention Faculty decided to raise international awareness about cancer and to advocate for its prevention, beginning with a model campaign in Africa.
Together we have launched the ‘Cancer Prevention 4 Africa’ campaign, which includes:
- A video that visualises the devastating effects of the runaway train of cancer in Africa
- Freely downloadable posters that improve people's understanding about the early signs of cancer and how simple lifestyle changes can greatly reduce the likelihood of developing many cancers
- A Cancer Prevention Advocacy Toolkit, with step-by-step instructions and examples on how to organise community action to bring about change
ESMO sincerely thanks the Cancer Society of Ghana and the Ghana Health Services for their support of the pilot project in Ghana, which has become a template for affordable and effective cancer awareness and prevention programmes in Africa that can also be replicated in other areas of the world.
The Cancer Prevention 4 Africa Campaign is a call to action to the international community to work together to save lives and stop the ‘runaway train’ cancer epidemic heading for Africa.
