ESMO Press Release: ESMO Launches First Leaders Generation Programme to Develop Oncology's Leaders of the Future

  • Date: 27 Jun 2016

Lugano, Switzerland – A total of 15 oncologists from 12 European countries* have been chosen to participate in the first ESMO Leaders Generation Programme designed to develop the careers of oncology’s future leaders.

The two-part programme** – which is being led by some of the most experienced and eminent oncologists in Europe – will give participants the knowledge and skills they need to thrive as leaders in the increasingly specialised and fast-changing field of oncology.

Christoph Zielinski, ESMO Executive Board member and Chair of the Fellowship & Award Committee who is responsible for developing the Programme, said: “Our pioneering Leaders Generation Programme will show participants how they can play an active role in shaping an integrated, multi-professional approach to cancer care across oncology worldwide – and will give them the professional and managerial skills they need to do so. This important initiative will not only develop individual careers but will also enrich the future of oncology as a profession.”

The six day Programme, which begins in Lugano, Switzerland, on 27 June and concludes in September,  includes a mix of presentations, practical workshops, breakout sessions and discussions led by the current ESMO leadership team, including a number of Executive Board members, alongside external experts from a number of fields.

One of the participants, Michiel Strijbos from Belgium, said: “From the start of my oncology career, I have benefitted from the networking opportunities, continuous education, guidance and support which ESMO provides its members. The Leaders Generation Programme will enable me to play a part in the continued growth and development of both the Society and oncology as a whole in the years ahead.”

ESMO President Fortunato Ciardiello said: “Our Leaders Generation Programme demonstrates our commitment to developing the careers of oncologists through the provision of oncology education, which forms an important part of the ESMO 2020 Vision.

“As one of the world’s leading oncology membership societies, ESMO has a responsibility to identify oncology’s future leaders and to ensure they have the skills they need to maintain ESMO’s development and its essential work in improving access to the best cancer care, for the benefit of all cancer patients worldwide.”
