Dr. El
Saghir is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the American
University of Beirut. He practices medical oncology and
takes particular interest in breast cancer. He has studied and published on the
epidemiology, prognostic factors and therapy of breast cancer and takes
particular interest in management of breast cancer in young women. Dr. El
Saghir has been very active in breast cancer awareness campaigns. He lectures
frequently in public conferences and has given hundreds of media interviews and
article contributions. His current main research interests are breast cancer
and wound healing. He has published and lectured extensively on the
epidemiology and early detection of breast cancer, as well as management of
breast cancer in young women. He has reviewed and is a member of the editorial board of several international
scientific medical journals and is a Specialty Editor for The Breast. He is author of the book “ABC of Breast Diseases”
in Arabic which was very favourably reviewed and referenced to.
He
graduated from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium in 1978 and completed
his hematology-oncology training at St. Luke’s- Roosevelt Hospital Center of
Columbia University in New York.
He served on the faculty of Long Island
University and SUNY, Brooklyn,
NY, King
Saud University
in Riyadh, SA, and Oakwood
Hospital, Wayne
State University
in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. El Saghir served as and is member of many American
Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) committees and task forces including the International
Committee and is a member of European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO)
Developing Countries Task Force, and the European Organization for Research and
Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Breast Cancer Group.
Dr. El
Saghir is a founding and Past President of the Lebanese Society of Medical
Oncology and the Lebanese Society of Internal Medicine. He has chaired many
scientific regional and international meetings, including Best of ASCO. He is the
coordinator of the Breast Tumor Clinic at the American
University of Beirut Medical
Center where he is also
member of the Hospital Committee on Cancer.
Dr. El Saghir
has received many awards including the Lebanon President’s Medal of Honour for Scientific
Achievement (Wissam al-Istihkak), Lebanese Order of Physicians, Lebanese
Society of Medical Oncology, Lebanese Movement for Women Rights and Cairo
University Hospitals Awards.
