Dr. Sigurdur Björnsson main field
of work and interests are Breast Cancer, Gastrointestinal Cancer, Genitourinary
Cancer and Lung Cancer.
He received his medical degree from the
University of Iceland Medical School in1968, Boards in Internal Medicine 1973
and Medical Oncology in 1975 in the United States.
Since 1978, he has been a consulting
medical oncologist at the University of Iceland Hospitals and he has his own private
medical oncology practice in Reykjavik.
He is the Chief of the Department of
Medical Oncology at the Landspitali-University Hospital, a position he has held
since 2000.
Dr. Björnsson has been a member of the
Executive Committee of the Icelandic Cancer Society since 1980, and he is its current
president. He was on the Executive Council of the Icelandic Medical Association
between the years 1995-2004.
He is an active member of ESMO, the
American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for
Cancer Research (AACR).
