Then and now

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) was established in 1975, when cancer was almost an undefeatable disease.

Medical treatment of cancer is a very complex field requiring extensive training in cancer biology, internal medicine and the specific activities and side-effects of cancer drugs. Therefore a Society to promote and defend the specialty of medical oncology was formed.

In 2005, at a time when cancer became a more treatable disease, ESMO celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Throughout the years, medical oncologists have assisted in the development and administration of cancer treatment regimens, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy and targeted treatment, as well as side-effect management. They have contributed to the research of agents in molecular biology, which has lead to innovative treatments such as gene therapy and targeted therapies. Some therapeutic approaches that attempt to cure, can be used in a multidisciplinary combination with surgery or radiotherapy or in the setting of supportive and palliative care.

ESMO has a strong commitment of service to all oncologists and cancer patients to increase cancer prevention, improve the quality of life for those afflicted with the disease, and to develop better treatments and even a possible cure.
