Lung cancer patients who have specific mutations in part of the gene for the cell surface molecule called epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) are much more likely to respond well to treatment with the drug gefitinib.
2006-10-02 - Mouthwash prevents oral sores and ulcers in chemotherapy patients
The painful mouth sores and ulcers that often trouble patients being treated with chemotherapy can be prevented either with ice chips or with an antiseptic mouthwash containing chlorhexidine. 2006-10-02 - Cetuximab improves response to chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer
Adding the cancer-targeting antibody cetuximab to normal cytotoxic chemotherapy for patients with advanced colorectal cancer improves efficacy and results in a better response rate, two groups of researchers report.
2006-10-02 - Easy-to-take regimen just as good for metastatic colorectal cancer
For patients with colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of their body, an easy-to-take oral chemotherapy regimen is just as effective in terms of survival as another that includes a drug that must be administered via an intravenous line. The preliminary results of this Phase III study also show that adding the antibody bevacizumab (Avastin) to standard chemotherapy regimens offers significant improvements in progression-free survival.
2006-10-02 - Test may spot lung cancer patients who will respond to chemotherapy
Spanish researchers have shown that testing for the expression of a specific gene in tumour tissue can help predict which metastatic lung cancer patients will respond to chemotherapy. Their results, reported for the first time today at the 31st Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), could one day help physicians identify patients who will better respond to the drug cisplatin--avoiding ineffective chemotherapy with its inherent side effects and expense.
2006-10-02 - Study offers clues about why some non-smokers get lung cancer
Researchers in France have identified a group of molecular markers that are distinct to some lung cancer patients who have never smoked. Their findings suggest the possibility that lung adenocarcinoma, currently the most common lung cancer, may be a "different" disease in molecular terms in smokers and non-smokers.
2006-10-02 - Drug combination offers benefits for postmenopausal women with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer
Post-menopausal women whose metastatic breast cancer is positive for hormone receptors and HER2 can extend the time during which their disease does not progress if treated with a combination of trastuzumab (Herceptin) and anastrozole (Arimidex), compared to anastrozole alone.
2006-10-02 - Three-drugvcombination delays disease progression in metastatic breast cancer
For patients with HER2-postive metastatic breast cancer, the combination of trastuzumab, docetaxel and capecitabine seems to delay disease progression and increase progression free survival compared to trastuzumab and docetaxel only, according to Phase II results reported today at that 31st Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) in Istanbul, Turkey.
2006-10-02 - Trials show dexrazoxane effective for serious anthracycline side-effect
Two multicenter studies have shown that the drug dexrazoxane can effectively treat accidental, anthracycline extravasation, a feared complication of chemotherapy which, if left untreated, can progress over weeks to devastating necrosis. Danish researchers report that only one out of 54 patients required surgical resection.
2006-10-02 - Blood test distinguishes between lung cancer and other lung diseases
Embargo date has been broken, therefore has been lifted!
2006-10-02 - Cetuximab dose escalation can benefit some metastatic colorectal patients
Some patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who do not experience the acne-like rash normally associated with cetuximab treatment may achieve better response rates if their dose is escalated, according to preliminary data report. The skin rash patients experience on cetuximab tends to correlate with how their cancer responds to the drug, which is an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor.
2006-10-01 - In lung cancer, cisplatin plus vinorelbine offers major survival benefits after lung resection
For lung cancer patients who have undergone a complete lung resection, treatment with a combination of the drugs cisplatin and vinorelbine offers a significant survival benefit, international researchers report.
2006-10-01 - Anthracycline-free chemotherapy shows promise in advanced breast cancer
For women with advanced breast cancer, three different chemotherapy regimens that avoid potentially cardio-toxic anthracycline drugs all offer benefits in terms of survival and disease progression.
2006-10-01 - Lapatinib effective for some women with inflammatory breast cancer
A new anti-cancer therapy that is easy to take and lacks most of the side-effects of conventional chemotherapy may be particularly effective for a sub-set of patients with the most lethal form of breast cancer
