ESMO Award

The winner of the ESMO Award will be presented during the 37th ESMO Congress, Vienna, Austria
28 September – 2 October 2012.

The esteemed ESMO Award was established in 1985 to annually recognize an ESMO member who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of oncology in Europe and who recognizes the importance of promoting oncology as a specialty within the international community.

The 2011 ESMO Award winner Prof. Johann De Bono – Royal Marsden Hospital, UK:

"This award is a great encouragement and will spur me on to continue to serve cancer patients. Drug development in oncology has made substantial strides forward over the last decade. While much still needs to be done, we can now be confident that much will be accomplished in the years ahead."

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates must be oncologists who have made a long-term impact in the field throughout their careers
  • Must be an ESMO Member
  • Have not previously received this award

Nomination Process

Nominations may be made by any ESMO Full, Honorary and Emeritus members. Candidates may not nominate themselves.

Selection

Candidates for the award will be considered by the ESMO Fellowship and Award Committee of renowned cancer leaders. After careful deliberations by the committee, its recommendations will be forwarded to the ESMO Executive Board for final consideration and selection.

The choice of the award winner will be made on the basis of the candidate's scientific accomplishments. No regard will be given to race, gender, and nationality, religious or political views.

The award consists of a statuette, certificate, free registration, free accommodation and reimbursement of travel expenses to the Vienna Congress.
