ESMO Fellowship in Translational Research
ESMO offers young oncologists up to 6 Translational Research Fellowships per
year at an outstanding cancer European laboratory or clinical facility with
organized translational research activities, for a period of 2 years (2nd year to be
approved).
Goal
Provide
training in translational research in European centers of excellence with
international reputation in the field.

Pre-requisites
- Candidates must
- be oncologists
- be no more than 39 years of
age
- be current ESMO members (or
must apply for membership)
- have a minimum of 1 or 2 years
experience in medical oncology, radiation oncology or surgical oncology
- have a reasonable knowledge
of the language of the host country or English
- Candidate's supervisors in both
host and home institute should be preferably an ESMO Full or Associate member
- Application must include:
- Curriculum vitae
- Digital photo
- Detailed description of the
planned translational research program
- Brief statement of
candidate's goals and how he/she proposes to utilize the acquired
techniques or knowledge in the home institute/country
- Name of selected host
institute
- Letter of acceptance from the
person responsible for the translational research project at the host
facility. Generally the host institute cannot hold two ESMO fellows at
the same time. Applicants should discuss appropriate timing with possible
supervisors
- Letter of recommendation from
the candidate's department head, mentioning the possibility of obtaining
a position in that department upon completion of the fellowship
- The ESMO Fellowship Program
encourages candidates to gain international experience. However, its main
purpose is to promote valid high-quality translational research projects.
Therefore, candidates may propose research fellowships for a project:
- in a host institute other
than their own, or
- on-site in their own home
institute
Please note that candidates cannot apply for more than one fellowship with the same research project.
Amount granted
The
total grant amount for a two year ESMO Fellowship is Euro 70,000 (35,000 Euro per
year) in favor of the fellow
Euro
1,000 is granted to the host institute to help defray the institution's costs
incurred by administering the research project, etc. NB: The 1,000 Euro is
granted only if the host institute is not the home institute
Procedure

Candidate applies for
fellowship or, if not an ESMO member yet, applies for ESMO membership and
fellowship
|
|
Applications are received
and checked for completeness by the ESMO Head Office
|
|
Acceptable applications
are reviewed by the ESMO Fellowship and Award Committee
|
|
Fellowship recipients are
chosen by the ESMO Fellowship and Award Committee based on the originality
and validity of the proposed project and its relevance to the field of
oncology
|
|
The fellowship will be
forwarded to the candidate upon receipt of her/his bank account number and
address
|
|
The fellow makes her/his
own travel and accommodation arrangements
|
|
The supervisor of the host
institute monitors the progress of the research project and liaise with the
ESMO Fellowship and Award Committee
|
|
The fellow sends a
detailed report at the end of the research project to the Chair of the ESMO
Fellowship and Award Committee for a short summary publication in the ESMO
Newsletter and full publication on the ESMO Web site (maximum 1,500 words)

Fellowship second year prolongation procedure
In order to have their
fellowship for a second year
|
Candidate sends a written
request 4 months before the end of the first year of the project, including a
report of the work to date and reasons for prolongation and a letter of
support for the prolongation from the host institute

The ESMO Fellowship and
Award Committee will review the request and decide upon the fellowship
prolongation
