Medical Oncologist's Recertification Approval

The ESMO Medical Oncologist's Recertification Approval (MORA) is a continuing medical education certificate that allows ESMO members to remain certified in medical oncology.

Why recertify?

  • Recertification is necessary for medical oncologists, to remain professionally certified by the leading professional European society in the field of medical oncology, ESMO.
  • Recertification guarantees that a certified medical oncologist has continued to update her/his knowledge and continues to possess the necessary skills and standards for the practice of medical oncology.

Who can recertify?

  • ESMO Full and Junior members who have passed the ESMO Examination, which entitles them to receive the ESMO Certificate in Medical Oncology.

How to recertify?

  • Re-taking the ESMO Examination (passing means recertification for 5 years)
    or
  • Adhering to the ESMO-MORA program (whose recertification is valid for 5 years).
In this case the complete application form - which can be downloaded from this page - should be sent to the ESMO Head Office together with a copy of the certificates.

What is the ESMO-MORA certificate?

  • A 5-year certificate
  • Consisting of 250 hours of continuing medical education

      • The AoO (Annals of Oncology) on-line CME test is accredited with 6 ESMO-MORA points cat. 1 (copy of the result sheet to be provided).
    • minimum 80 hours of MORA Category 2 education (such as patient-centered activities, teaching other medical and healthcare professionals, self-assessment examinations and reviews, self-instructional materials, use of databases and other computer-based materials in connection with patient care activities). AIO points are counted as MORA Category 2.
      • other accepted CME activities
    • remaining 50 hours consisting of either MORA Category 1 or Category 2 education
  • CME must occur in a single, consecutive period of time and be reported in 1-hour blocks (one credit point is assigned for one hour of participation in a CME activity).
  • There are no set reporting periods. Medical oncologists may apply whenever they have completed the required hours of CME. But this must be latest within the 5th year of the certification validity.
  • There is no minimum reporting time. The CME points reported must have been accumulated maximum within the 5th year of the current certification validity.
  • MORA recertification will then be valid for the next 5 years.
The application form (which can be downloaded from the 'Registration' section), must be completed and sent to the ESMO Head Office, together with a copy of the certificates clearly stating the amount of CME points gained for each event/course.
