ESMO Examination in Medical OncologyESMO inaugurated the Examination in Medical Oncology in 1989, which provides those who pass a well-recognized ESMO Certificate in Medical Oncology. The goal of the ESMO Examination is to provide a more uniform system of training and evaluation of medical oncologists in Europe. This certificate is increasingly accepted as evidence of continuing education and updating of professional skills.
Why take the Examination?
- The ESMO Examination certifies that a medical oncologist possesses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for optimal treatment and palliative care of cancer patients
- In some European countries the ESMO Examination is already required as part of the national curriculum for achieving specialization in medical oncology
- It offers physicians the opportunity to test and assess their level of knowledge
- It enables participants to become certified ESMO members or to re-certify
Who can take the Examination?
- ESMO Full and Junior members
- Eligible members who wish to (re-)certify (certification expires after five (5) years)
What is the Examination format?
- A written examination of 120 minutes
- Questions covering all fields of medical oncology, including basic elements of tumor histology, epidemiology, and biology
- 60 multiple-choice questions, including 30 Type A and 10 each of Types B, E, and K Prime
- Each question counting 1 mark. Pass is 36 = 60% correct answers (no deductions for incorrect answers)
Where and When?
- Exam sessions are available at the ESMO Congress
- Simultaneously run parallel sessions can be arranged if a minimum of 10 registered participants is guaranteed
