Regulation and instructions
Who can submit an abstract?
Abstracts may be submitted by anyone wishing to present their study data during the 33rd ESMO Congress.
What major requirements apply?
- Each abstract must be sponsored by a current Full member of the European Society for Medical Oncology.
- The material must not have been previously published in any publication in peer review setting or presented at a meeting of any other scientific organization prior to the 33rd ESMO Congress.
- The character limit for all submitted abstracts is 2,000 excluding spaces. This limit includes characters entered in the title, abstract body and table fields (default of 225 characters per table) but not the author names and institutions
When and how?
- By 2 April 2008 on paper
- By 16 April 2008 online (16:00 Central European Summer Time)

Outcome letters
Presenting authors will be informed about the outcome of their abstract submission in early July 2008
Late-breaking abstracts
What is a late-breaking abstract?
Late-breaking abstracts are studies with new research findings for which no preliminary data are available by the deadline of 16 April 2008 (16:00 CEST).
What major requirements apply?
- The work must not have been previously published in any publication in a peer review setting
- The work must not have been presented at a meeting of any other scientific organization prior to the 33rd ESMO Congress
- Only abstracts offering high quality data will be considered
When and how?
- By 30 July 2008 via E-mail to program@esmo.org. A skeleton indicating the type of data that will be available must be submitted by 16 April 2008 (16:00 CEST).

Travel grants
What is a travel grant?
A travel grant is a subsidy for travel ticket, accommodation and Congress registration.
Who can apply for a travel grant?
- All abstract submitters aged 40 years or younger can apply for a travel grant.
- The ESMO 2008 Scientific Committee will award a restricted number of travel grants to the Congress from among the accepted abstracts submitted.
What major requirements apply?
- Submitters must be aged 40 years or younger
- The following documents must be received, by the ESMO Congress Department in Lugano, Switzerland by the relevant abstract deadline:
1. letter of introduction by the applicant 2. proposed abstract (the applicant must be the first author and presenter) 3. readable photocopy of either identity card or passport 4. short curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum)
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
