33rd ESMO Congress

Stockholm, Sweden

12-16 September 2008

José Baselga, Spain
2008 ESMO and Congress President

It is with great pleasure that on behalf of ESMO I announce the 33rd ESMO Congress, in Stockholm, 12-16 September 2008.

We are at a crucial moment in our fight against cancer. Recent advances in all areas of basic, translational and clinical research are bringing a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of cancer, providing new and improved tools for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cancer types. We have never before made so much progress in our fight to eradicate cancer as a cause of death.

The ESMO meeting in Stockholm will continue to expand its role as the premier European congress in Oncology and will serve as the forum to present and discuss these advances. Our society is increasingly engaged in the promotion of the practice of medical oncology, in providing medical education to medical oncologists and healthcare professionals, and fostering the careers of young medical oncologists.

So, expect the ESMO meeting in Stockholm to be a venue for interdisciplinary interaction, a teaching ground, and a place to discuss critical issues for European oncology such as cancer research in Europe, the training of young oncologists and better integration of medical oncology with other specialties and patient advocacy groups.

Although it is clearly too early to imagine the highlights of Oncology in 2008 and of the ESMO Congress in Stockholm, start marking your calendars now. At this early stage, I would like to extend our gratitude to the ESMO member volunteers and ESMO staff who are already working for the success of the congress.

To all ESMO members and colleagues, a warm welcome to Stockholm 2008

Hakan Mellstedt, Sweden
2008 ESMO Congress Local Committee Chair

On behalf of the Local Committee, I am honored to invite you to the 33rd ESMO Congress in Stockholm, 12-16 September 2008.

Stockholm is a beautiful city built on several islands connected by bridges. The Old Town, “Gamla stan”, dates back to the 12th century with its merchant houses from Hanseatic times. The Royal Palace, built on the foundations of a mid 13-Century castle, is also located in this area.

In mid-September it is late summer in Stockholm. The days are warm, the trees are green and the sun sets at around 7:00 p.m. A boat trip around Stockholm or into the archipelago offers visitors the opportunity to see beautiful scenery. Cultural activities are plentiful and visitors can choose from opera, theatres, concert halls and museums. Well worthy of a visit are the early 17-Century warship Wasa, raised from the seabed after 333 years, the famous outdoor museum Skansen, the Town Hall and the Concert Hall where the Noble Prize ceremony and banquet take place.

Once spiritually nourished, there is an abundance of restaurants where one may enjoy a meal, ranging from small, cosy old cellar vaults to international establishments with acclaimed Michelin stars.

Stockholm is ranked as one of the best congress cities in the world, qualifying as number four on the International Congress & Convention Association list. The congress venue, Älvsjömässan, is easily reachable within 10 minutes by a frequent train service from the city center.

I encourage everyone to mark the date of the ESMO 2008 Stockholm congress in their calendars, and reiterate our warm invitation to all ESMO members and oncology healthcare professionals to attend the congress. ESMO 2008 will be a unique event with a strong focus on multidisciplinary oncology. With your participation, this congress can be a milestone in the future development of ESMO into a multidisciplinary oncology society.
