Hans-Joachim Schmoll, Germany ESMO Symposium on Testicular Cancer Scientific Committee ChairTesticular cancer is the most frequent tumor occurring in young men
between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five and has seen the strongest
increase in incidence among all cancer types over the last 20 years.
Despite this, the cure rate, which was very low in the 1970's and
1980's, improved dramatically following the introduction of
platinum-based chemotherapy. This high cure rate changed the
treatment strategy in virtually all stages of testicular cancer, away
from aggressive surgical or radiation treatment to that of surveillance
without treatment or minimal treatment for most patients in early
stages and only limited chemotherapy in advanced stages. However, it remains that a minority of patients with germ cell cancer still die from their disease.
All
these changes in treatment approach, encompassing several options for
patients, need highly informed and experienced doctors, both to give
the patient the best advice on selecting optimal treatment and then to
implement with expertise the adopted course. The ESMO Symposium on Testicular
Cancer will present the most recent information about biology and
molecular background in order to understand the high chemo-sensitivity
of this tumor, prognostic factors and decision-making options for
individual patients. In particular, treatment options will be discussed
against the background of the European Consensus Guidelines.
The ESMO Symposium on Testicular Cancer will give a complete overview of current knowledge
in tumor biology and in particular treatment of germ cell cancer in
men, including practical advice for the clinical routine. |
