The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is the leading European professional organization for medical oncology, with a special focus on a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.

Within the scope of its mission to provide optimal care to all cancer patients:

ESMO offers a variety of educational and scientific activities addressed to the whole ESMO community:

• for young oncologists – to support their training and career development opportunities
• for trained oncologists – to update their skills and knowledge of therapy and care
• for cancer patients – to help them gain a thorough and in-depth knowledge of their disease, how to fight it and how to live with it
  

In support of all oncology professionals and patients, ESMO also monitors, influences and participates in political affairs, activities and debates and develops position statements on issues which may impact the field of oncology.

Doctors and patients alike know that only through regular participation in congresses, courses, and other educational activities, oncologists can remain up-to-date on the latest treatment options.

Therefore, ESMO encourages young oncologists in their research goals and career development through fellowships and grants, while trained oncologists are offered valuable and convenient opportunities to participate in events where state-of-the-art oncology is presented by leading global experts.

Continuous education is also the foundation of quality treatment and care. To this end, ESMO proposes evaluation programs to certify the level of knowledge, competence and skills of medical oncologists as well as the level of service of cancer centers.

ESMO's global community unites oncology professionals with cancer patients and their families. It also includes political, media and industry representatives, who contribute through supporting healthcare legislation, increasing awareness and sponsorships. Resources: sharing knowledge 

ESMO's national and international scientific and educational events, as well as online services and publications, compose a vast wealth of resources, providing members of the ESMO community with access to the information they need. Online information puts resources at your fingertips round the clock. 

Evaluation: emphasizing quality

ESMO promotes accreditation programs to evaluate the level of knowledge, competence and skills required to be recognized as a quality medical oncology practitioner. The Society also establishes minimum standard criteria for cancer care as well as specialized units in cancer centers.
